This song was written one rainy September night my sophomore year of college, the storm was keeping me awake and the TV signal was out. It was one of those nights you ponder all the world's problems and pray deep and hard for your generation in general.
Verse One -
Near midnight in my subzero dorm,
Rain pouring down, watching the September storm
Lightning flashing as the rain-dancers play,
Their laughter and thunder I hear as I pray
Knowledge and wisdom I'm seeking to find,
But there's so many things chasing each other through my mind...
Chorus -
We're in our early twenties, like the cast of the TV shows
Are there rules to this game called "Growing Up"?
For sure don't ask us, cause we don't know
Going in every direction form heaven to hell
Watching us, there's so many stories you could tell...
Verse Two -
Joining the military, plummet off a cliff
Every day our relational loyalties shift
Daily toils of studying, gonna be a nurse
New wedding every month, our debt is our curse
Crappy apartment working fast food and single
New Year's Day with the dog and a can of Pringles...
(Chorus)
Verse Three -
Can't read the Scriptures as often as we'd like
Too busy jousting over the environment, abortion and gay rights
Who are Mark Twain and Agatha Christie?
They aren't on "Glee", "Jersey Shore" or "Duck Dynasty"
See you later high school, hello babies
To be honest, adulthood is crazy....
Bridge -
Never known life without the Internet
Saturday cartoons on a laptop-size TV set
Music lived in radios and on CDs
9-11 is our national tragedy....
Chorus Two -
We're in our early twenties, like the cast of the TV shows
Unlike them, however, constantly on the go
Miserable, wretched, unfulfilled and unhappy
Always rushing somewhere, profane and snappy
So you tell me this is growing up?
Keep the caffeine flowing in my cup
Hang on a second, gotta check this email
Just realized these are the stories our kids will tell....
